Recommended reading for an EBS R12 upgrade

On the heels of Steven Chan's pointer to a new EBS R12 best practices whitepaper and Floyd Teter's post about R12 upgrade reference documents, I thought I'd chime in with the list of documents that I used during an R12 upgrade earlier this year. The collection of available upgrade documentation has certainly become more tidy, particularly with the creation of Metalink Note 461705.1 and the staggeringly comprehensive collection of documents that it references. To be fair, things had probably been getting more tidy in the months before our upgrade as well. At some point, it became necessary to stop doing document searches and concentrate on the execution of the upgrade itself. :-)

This list comes straight from the "Reference" section of my production upgrade checklist. In retrospect, I don't know why I thought I might actually have time to go digging through these documents during the upgrade itself.

Metalink references

Here, in no particular order, are the Metalink documents that I referenced when executing the technical part of the upgrade. Some of these docs may be slightly out-of-date, since our upgrade was to 12.0.3, and pre-dated the availability of the 12.0.4 Rapid Install. I've attempted to point to updated docs where appropriate.

Note 405293.1: Oracle Applications Release Notes Release 12
Documentation errata, random notes not found in the install docs, and known-issue resolution. What's not to like? If upgrading directly to 12.0.4 (and you should be), the relevant document is Note 394692.1
Note 402310.1: Oracle Applications Installation and Upgrade Notes Release 12 (12.0) for Linux (32-bit)
Yes, we were running on 32-bit hardware. This note now reads "Release 12 (12.0.4)" instead of "Release 12 (12.0)", so it's up-to-date with the latest trends...except for that whole 32-bit thing.
Note 403339.1: Oracle 10gR2 Database Preparation Guidelines for an E-Business Suite Release 12 Upgrade
Lots of options, depending on where you start the upgrade and where you're going (10.2.0.2 or 10.2.0.3). As an aside, if you need to upgrade your database as part of the upgrade to R12, do yourself a favor and perform the database upgrade as part of a separate outage. No sense jamming everything into one long weekend.
Note 399362.1: Oracle Applications Release 12 Upgrade Sizing and Best Practices
This is a pretty old note, relative to the release of R12. It hasn't been superseded as far as I can tell, though.
Note 396009.1: Database Initialization Parameters for Oracle Applications Release 12
If you need to know which "hidden" init.ora parameters are needed to keep your EBS database running smoothly, this is the place to look. ;-)
Note 401424.1: Oracle Applications DBA Minipack R12.AD.A
If you're upgrading directly from 11i to 12.0.4, then patch 6604842 is what you need, not the patch referenced in this document. Then again, if you're following the appropriate upgrade guide, you knew that already.
Note 387859.1: Using AutoConfig to Manage System Configurations in Oracle Applications Release 12
It never hurts to know what quirks may lie in the most recent release of AutoConfig
Note 375351.1: ORA-20005 WHEN GATHERING STATISTICS FOR APPS 11i IN 10g DB
Not strictly an upgrade problem, but I ran across this issue when I switched to the "Gather Auto" option post-upgrade, and the fix listed in this doc for 11i also worked fine (not surprisingly) in R12.
Note 376811.1: Integrating Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 with 10g AS Oracle Internet Directory and Oracle Single Sign-On
Worth a review if you're running EBS integrated with Single Sign-On. Some of the parameters to the SetSSOReg script have changed, and at the very least you'll need to register the new 10.1.3 ORACLE_HOME with SSO.
Note 431324.1: Manual forms compilation in R12 fails with: FRM-91500: Unable to start/complete the build
The note says 12.0 to 12.0.1 are affected, but we still saw the problem in 12.0.3. Given the nature of the problem (bugs in scripts in the 10.1.2 ORACLE_HOME), this is not too surprising. The various RUP releases (2, 3, 4) don't patch that part of the tech stack. It's possible that this issue no longer exists in the 12.0.4 Rapid Install; I have not had an opportunity to check.
Note 445192.1: Oracle E-Business Suite 12.0.3 Release Update Pack Readme
Since we did our upgrade from 11i to 12.0.3, rather than 12.0.4, we had the additional step of applying R12 RUP3 after upgrading to the base R12 release. People should be upgrading directly to 12.0.4 now, so this Note is probably not as useful these days.

Non-Metalink references

I used the first two documents in this list so much that I took the rare step of actually killing some trees to print them out and scribble notes on them. I kept the XML Publisher/Gateway guides on my list for post-upgrade finishing steps. Needless to say, the R12 documentation on OTN has a lot of other must-read material; these are just the documents that I used during the upgrade process itself. I've updated the links to point to the most recent set of docs as of this writing (the 12.0.4 documentation library).

    Hi Sufi,

Currently, there isn't another RUP after RUP4 for the entire Apps system. There are patches that update the Financials and HRMS families to version 12.0.5, but not the entire system. It can be a bit confusing. :-) Check Steven Chan's article on the topic for more information: http://blogs.oracle.com/stevenChan/2008/04/what_happened_to_ebusiness_sui.html

Keeping your system up to date will always be a work in progress, and the requirements will often vary depending on your installed applications modules. I suggest that you review the recommended patch list for R12 on Metalink, and perhaps explore the Patch Wizard functionality in Oracle Applications Manager to generate a list of recommended patches.

    Thanks for visiting!

    Regards,

    John P.

Well, it figures. On the very day I posted the previous comment, RUP6 for R12 was announced: http://blogs.oracle.com/stevenChan/2008/11/apps_release_1206_release_update_pack_now_avail.html

Normally, I wouldn't bother correcting myself, but since my "no RUPs past RUP4" statement was so close to the release of RUP6, it seemed like a good idea. :-)

    Regards,

    John P.
